CHESTER A. ARTHUR and WALTER Q. GRESHAM. Partly Printed DS: "Chester A. Arthur" as President and "W.Q. Gresham" as Postmaster General, 1p, 17x14. Washington, 1884 June 20. In part: "Know ye, That reposing special trust and confidence in the Intelligence, Diligence, and Discretion of William E. Blunt, the President of the United States nominated, and, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, I do appoint him Postmaster at Haverhill, in the County of Essex, State of Massachusetts...." 2½-inch diameter gold Post Office Department seal with burgundy ribbons affixed at lower left. Two weeks earlier at the Republican National Convention held in Chicago, June 3-6, 1884, President ARTHUR unsuccessfully sought his party's presidential nomination. On the first ballot, he finished second to his former Secretary of State James G. Blaine, 334½ to 278 delegate votes with 411 needed for the nomination. Blaine was nominated on the fourth ballot, 541-207. WALTER QUINTIN GRESHAM succeeded Postmaster General Timothy O. Howe, who had died on March 25, 1883. He served from April 3, 1883 and resigned on September 24, 1884 to succeed Secretary of the Treasury Charles J. Folger, who had died on September 4, 1884. In October, Gresham resigned, having been appointed U.S. Judge for the 7th Judicial Circuit. On March 6, 1893, Gresham was appointed Secretary of State by President Cleveland and served until his death on May 28, 1895. Uniformly brown. Shaded from prior framing. Chipped and torn edges. Separation at mid-vertical fold touches the "h" in Gresham. Large 4-inch-long signature of Arthur.
