GEORGE BUSH. TLS: "George Bush" as
Chairman of the Republican National Committee, 1p, 8½x11. Washington,
D.C., 1973 May 31. To William Stanhope, Arvada, Colorado. In full:
"Thanks ever so much for your letter. I am more than happy to send along the
enclosed photo and to be in such notable company." Photo not included.
George Bush had just become Chairman of the Republican National Committee
during the most trying times for his party. On June 17, 1972, five burglars
broke into the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate
office building in Washington, D.C. Their actions led to the resignation of
President Nixon. Bush, among others, strongly advised the President to resign
for the sake of the country and the Republican Party. George H.W. Bush,
son of Connecticut U.S. Senator Prescott Bush and father of the current 43rd
U.S. President, has one of the most impressive resumés of any U.S.
President: Pilot in World War II (1942-1945), awarded Distinguished Flying
Cross and three air medals (1945); Yale graduate (1948); Partner, Bush-Overbey
Oil Development Co. (1950-1953); President, Zapata Off-Shore Co. (1954-1964);
Chairman, Harris County, Texas, Republican Party (1963-1964); U.S.
Representative from Texas (1967-1971); U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. (1971-1973);
Chairman, Republican National Committee (1973-1974); first Chief, U.S.
Liaison Office to China (1974-1975); Director, Central Intelligence Agency
(1976-1977); Professor, Rice University (1979); U.S. Vice President (1981-1989);
and 41st U.S. President (1989-1993). Fine condition.
