     Document 2729

GERALD R. FORD. Typed Transcript signed: "Gerald R. Ford", "William L. Hungate", "Elizabeth Holtzman", "Henry P. Smith III", "Wiley Mayne", "Larry Hogan", "Bob Kastenmeier", "David W. Dennis", "James R. Mann" and "Don Edwards", 46p, 8½x14, separate sheets. Washington, 1974 October 17. Headed: "Appearance by the President/before the Subcommittee on Criminal Justice/Committee on the Judiciary/House of Representatives/Rayburn House Office Building/10:00 A.M. EDT". Testimony of President Ford relating to his unconditional pardon of President Nixon on September 8, 1974, signed by President Ford, Committee Chairman William L. Hungate and eight subcommittee members. During New York Congresswoman HOLTZMAN's questioning (page 35) regarding "the suspicions that were created by the circumstances of the pardon which you issued, the secrecy with which it was issued, and the reasons for which it was issued which made people question whether or not, in fact, it was a deal", an obviously indignant President Ford interrupted: "May I comment there? I want to assure you, the Members of the subcommittee, the Members of the Congress, and the American people, there was no deal, period, under no circumstances." The first signed transcript of this historic appearance we have ever seen. Creased, worn with folds touching some signatures. Date stamped "Dec 9 1980" at upper left margin. Stapled at upper left blank corners, first and last pages have separated. 1¼-inch tear at lower left blank corner of last page (all paper intact).
