JIMMY CARTER. Typed Quotation signed: "J.
Carter", 1p, 5_x7¼. Headed: "March 26, 1979". In full:
"'Peace has one thing in common with its enemy, with the fiend in battles,
with war: Peace is active, not passive; peace is doing, not waiting; peace is
aggressive, attacking, peace plans its strategy and encircles the enemy; peace
marshals its forces and storms the gates; peace gathers its weapons and pierces
the defense. Peace, like war, is waged.'" On March 26, 1979, the Camp
David peace treaty was signed by Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and
Egyptian President Anwar Sadat at the White House. President Jimmy Carter spoke
of how peace was waged like war at the treaty-signing ceremony. At a state
dinner that evening, Begin suggested that Carter be awarded the Nobel Peace
Prize and Sadat agreed. Begin and Sadat had won the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize for
their efforts to bring about a settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Carter's
nomination was received too late to be considered. To see the front page of the
