     Document 42359

JAMES MONROE and JOHN QUINCY ADAMS. Partly Printed DS: "James Monroe" as fifth U.S. President and "John Quincy Adams" as Secretary of State, 1p, 11¼x15. Washington, 1824 December 22. Countersigned: "Bev. Chew/Coll" as Collector of the District of Mississippi, State of Louisiana. In full: "Suffer the Ship Susan of Topsham - Caleb Heath master or commander of the burthen of Two hundred and Seventy tons or thereabouts mounted with no guns navigated with Twelve men To Pass with her Company Passengers Goods and Merchandize without any hinderance seisure or molestation the said Ship appearing by good testimony to belong to one or more of the Citizens of the United States and to him or them only." Manuscript note on verso, Port of New York, 1825 August 18, indicates that "N. Merrill is at present Master of the within Vessel". Louisiana became a state in 1812. In 1817, President Madison appointed BEVERLY CHEW of Louisiana as Collector and Inspector of the Revenue for the District of Mississippi. In 1820, President Monroe appointed him Collector of the District of Mississippi in Louisiana. On January 17, 1825, just 26 days after Chew signed this document, President Monroe nominated him for another term as Collector of the Customs for the district of New Orleans. In the election of 1824, JOHN QUINCY ADAMS, Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay and William H. Crawford ran for President. While Jackson won more electoral votes than any one of his opponents (99), he did not have a majority (131) and the election was decided by the House of Representatives. On February 9, 1825, Adams was declared the victor with 13 states to Jackson's seven and Crawford's four. This document was issued while Adams was awaiting the House's decision. Documents signed by two U.S. Presidents are extremely desirable. Creased. Folds, vertical fold touches the "M" of Madison's signature. 5¼x½ hole touches vignette, but not text. 1¾x¾ hole at upper right blank margin. Seal missing, remnant shows striations. Embossed margin from prior framing shows no shading.
