     Document 27771

JOHN Q. ADAMS and GEORGE GRAHAM. Partly Printed DS: "J.Q. Adams" as sixth U.S. President and "Geo Graham" as Commissioner of the General Land Office, 1p, 15½x9½. Washington, 1825 April 2. In part: "Whereas Amos Burden of Wooster Massachusetts has deposited in the General Land Office of the United States a certificate of the Register of the Land Office at Detroit Michigan Territory whereby it appears that full payment has been made by the said Amos Burden according to the provisions of the Act of Congress of the 24th of April 1820 entitled 'An act making further provision for the sale of the Public Lands' for the North West quarter of Section Seven in Township Two South, in Range five East in the District of Detroit of Territory of Michigan, containing One hundred and Seventy eight Acres and Sixty eight hundredths of an Acre...." GEORGE GRAHAM had been Madison and Monroe's Secretary of War ad interim from October 22, 1816 to December 9, 1817. The Land Act of April 24, 1820 abolished the credit system that enabled settlers to make deferred payment on their land and reduced the per acre purchase price from $2 to $1.25, with the entire amount to be paid at the time of purchase. The Territory of Michigan was established in 1805. Michigan became a state in 1837. Folds. Vertical fold touches the "G" in Graham. Rippled and lightly soiled. Shaded at edges. Pinhead-size hole between 2 lines of text does not touch writing. Stains on verso lightly show through to text, but not Adams' signature.
