     Document 257159

LYNDON B. JOHNSON. Large Photo Mount inscribed and signed: "To Arthur Goldberg-/Patriot-statesman and friend-/Lyndon B. Johnson" most probably as President. Color, 14x18 overall, image 10½x13¼ (two surfaces). President Kennedy appointed GOLDBERG his first Secretary of Labor in 1961 and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court on October 1, 1962. President JOHNSON convinced Justice Goldberg to resign his lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court in 1965 to become U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations after the sudden death of Adlai Stevenson. It was a critical period for U.S. foreign relations. In March, U.S. Marines had landed in South Vietnam, the first American combat troops to land there. In April, U.S. Marines landed in the Dominican Republic after clashes between rebels and the Dominican Army. In May, U.S. raids on North Vietnam resumed after a lull failed to bring about negotiations. Believing he could not play a part in ending the Vietnam War, Goldberg resigned from the United Nations in 1968. Presidential photographs inscribed to important statesmen rarely appear on the market. This is an especially desirable one. Edges of photo are slightly nicked. Nailhead-size nick at blank right margin of photo. The photo has separated from board at upper edge. The mount shows 2 nicks at lower left edge. Overall, fine condition.
