Document 13552
MARTIN VAN BUREN. ALS: "M. Van Buren",
1p, 8x5¼. Lindenwald, 1848 October 18. In full: "I cheerfully comply
with your request & am very respectfully yours." At the Free Soil Party
convention held in Buffalo, New York, August 9-10, 1848, Van Buren was nominated
for President for the third time. He had won in 1836 and lost in 1840. Free
Soilers were Democrats opposed to the extension of slavery but were not
abolitionists. Their campaign slogan was "Free Soil, Free Speech, Free Labor,
Free Men". Van Buren received less than 300,000 votes out of almost three
million cast but his popularity in the north ensured Whig Zachary Taylor's
defeat of Democrat Lewis Cass, 163-127 electoral votes. In New York (36
electoral votes), Massachusetts (12) and Vermont (6), Van Buren actually beat
Cass and the combined Van Buren-Cass vote in each state exceeded Taylor's. On
blue paper. Folds and lightly creased, 1 touches the "u" in Buren. Overall, fine
condition.
