Document 4906
RUTHERFORD B. HAYES. ALS: "R.B.
Hayes", 1p, 5½x9. Fifth Avenue Hotel, Madison Square, New York, 1885
August 10. To Hon. Thomas Donaldson. In full: "Thanks for your
kind dispatch. I would be delighted to stop with you. It would be a treat for
what you have & what you are. But I am engaged to go to New York Central and
must postpone to another trip seeing you & yours. Will it last until
October? I will then manage it. What a perfect gem of a speech Blaine made at
Augusta. It has more quotable sentences than anything of its length since 'As
you like it.'" Note at top by DONALDSON: "Return this to Thos
Donaldson 326 N. York Phil Pa." Former Speaker of the House, U.S. Senator
and Secretary of State JAMES G. BLAINE of Augusta, Maine was the
unsuccessful Republican nominee for President in 1884 against Cleveland. Light
ink transference, fine condition.
