Document 13870
THEODORE ROOSEVELT. Early ALS: "Theodore
Roosevelt" as New York State Assemblyman, 1p, 5½x9. Assembly
Chamber, Albany, 1882 April 7. To (James S.) Lehmair. In
full: "Many thanks for your very kind letter, which I fully appreciated.
I certainly waked the echos (sic) by my attack. Whether it will
come to anything or not I can not now tell. I am up to my ears in work, so I
know that you will excuse the brevity of this answer to your kind letter."
JAMES S. LEHMAIR was a New York City Republican leader. During the 1882
session of the Assembly, ROOSEVELT was the Minority Leader. He was only
23 years old, but quickly rose to his party's leadership in his first term. When
the Republicans became the majority, he was the favored candidate for Assembly
Speaker but was defeated when deals were made among his opponents. The main
reason for opposition to his candidacy, other than his youth, was that Roosevelt
voted his own mind, at times against the wishes of his party. His energy in
speaking on the issues is evident in this letter. After both his wife and his
mother died on the same day, February 14, 1884, Roosevelt left the Assembly and
moved to a ranch in the Dakota Territory, where he remained for two years. When
he returned to New York City in 1886, with Lehmair's support, 28-year-old
Roosevelt received the Republican nomination for Mayor of New York City but lost
the November election to industrialist and Congressman Abram S. Hewitt. 3 file
holes at left blank margin. Diagonal crease runs across the letter. Overall,
fine condition.
