THEODORE ROOSEVELT. TLS: "T.
Roosevelt", 1p, 6½x7¾. New York, 1912 January 20. To Mr. A.E. Perry,
Coalgate, Oklahoma. In full: "I appreciate your kind letter. Indeed it
would be a pleasure to me to hear from you at any time." Vertical fold
touches the "R". Light transference of letterhead at lower blank margin. Fine
condition. With postmarked stamped envelope addressed to Perry at the
Republican Congressional Committee, Coalgate, Oklahoma. Soiled, torn at top edge
from opening. Roosevelt sought to wrest the Republican presidential nomination
from President Taft at the June 18-22, 1912 Republican National Convention. When
Taft was renominated, Roosevelt's supporters left the Republican convention and,
on June 19, 1912, organized the Progressive Party. Roosevelt was then nominated
at the Progressive Party Convention in August. On November 5, 1912, Democrat
Wilson was elected President, Roosevelt was second and Taft was third. Two
items.
