     Document 16465

ULYSSES S. GRANT. ALS: "U.S. Grant", 1½p, 5x8. Head-Quarters Armies of the United States, 1866 May 31. To Jones. In full: "I start this evening for West Point to attend the funeral of Gen. Scott. From there I shall start for St. Louis Via Chicago, reaching there on Sunday morning. Mrs. Grant will be with me and we propose becoming 'regular boarders' at your house during our stay. If we should remain over Monday evening I would have no objection to meeting about four of your friends socially until say 2 in the morning. I presume Mrs. J. let you down light upon that subject I wrote to her about." GENERAL WINFIELD SCOTT, known as "Old Fuss and Feathers" for his obsession with procedure and detail and for his elaborate uniforms, had died at West Point on May 29, 1866, two weeks before his 80th birthday. He had held the rank of General in three wars (War of 1812, Mexican War, Civil War) and was the unsuccessful Whig candidate for President in 1852. General Scott was the foremost American military figure between the Revolution and the Civil War. In 1855, he was promoted to Lieutenant General, becoming the first man since George Washington to hold that rank. Scott was still Commander in Chief of the U.S. Army when the Civil War broke out in April 1861, but his proposed strategy of splitting the Confederacy (the plan eventually adopted) was ridiculed. Age (75) forced his retirement the following November. President Lincoln and his Cabinet bade General Scott farewell as he left Washington to retire at West Point. On March 9, 1864, ULYSSES S. GRANT became the third Lieutenant General in U.S. history and was appointed General in Chief of the Army of the United States. Folds, which show slight separation at edges. Vertical fold is heavily shaded, touching the "U" in signature. Slightly shaded edges. Overall, fine condition.
