Document 16494
ULYSSES S. GRANT. Partly Printed DS: "U.S.
Grant" as President, 1p, 7¾x10. Washington, 1875 August 20. In
full: "I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of State [Hamilton
Fish] to affix the Seal of the United States to the envelope of my letter to
His Royal Majesty Leopold II, King of the Belgians (Adam Badeau's credentials)
dated this day and signed by me and for so doing this shall be his warrant."
ADAM BADEAU, military secretary to General Grant during the Civil War,
had been appointed by President Grant as U.S. Consul-General in London in
1870. Five years later, Grant appointed him U.S. Minister to Brussels (Belgium),
but Badeau declined the appointment, serving in London until 1881. The
envelope mentioned in this document contained the Letter of State from Grant to
King Leopold containing Badeau's credentials. KING LEOPOLD was most
helpful to the United States from 1858-1863, when he served as arbiter in
settling a dispute between the U.S. and Chile over claims against Chile when it
seized the U.S. Brig Macedonian in 1821 in Peru. Lightly creased,
slightly soiled. Overall, fine condition.
