PORFIRIO DIAZ. Manuscript DS: "Porfirio Diaz" in Spanish,
as President of Mexico, 1½p, front and verso, 9x12½. Mexico City, 1898
April 27. Not translated. To Juan L. Cuestas congratulating him upon his
election as Provisional President of Uruguay, expressing the hope of a friendly
relationship between the two Latin American countries. JUAN LINDOLFO CUESTAS
(1837-1905) was acting President of Uruguay from August 25, 1897 to February 10,
1898 when he became Provisional President, serving until February 15, 1899.
Two weeks later, Lindolfo Cuestas became President of Uruguay and served a
four-year term until March 1, 1903. Porfirio Diaz (1830-1915) was
President of Mexico from 1877-1880 and 1884-1911. Two days before Diaz signed
this document, the United States declared war on Spain. Lightly creased.
Horizontal fold touches signature. File hole at upper blank corner. Fine
condition.
