MAURICE H. STANS. Photograph signed: "Maurice H. Stans
1979". B/w, 8x10. Maurice H. Stans (1908-1998) served as Nixon's Secretary
of Commerce from 1969-1972 when he became Chairman of the Finance Committee for
the Committee to Re-Elect the President (CREEP). It was in this latter role that
he became embroiled in the Watergate scandal. He was indicted on 10 counts of
perjury and conspiracy involving a $200,000 contribution from financier Robert
Vesco, but was acquitted. He subsequently pleaded guilty to five violations of
campaign finance laws and paid a $5,000 fine. Fine condition.
