EDITH RONNE. Philatelic Envelope signed: "Edith M.
Ronne/Member of the Ronne/Antarctic Research Expedition/1946-48", 6½x3½.
First Day Cover honoring Charles Lindbergh, 13-cent stamp for the 50th
anniversary of Lindbergh's transatlantic flight affixed, postmarked Roosevelt
Field Sta., New York, May 20, 1977, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Information on "Long
Island's Lindbergh Air Show" imprinted at lower margin. Edith "Jackie" Ronne,
the wife of Norweigan-born American naval Captain Finn Ronne (1899-1980), who
led the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, was the first American woman to
set foot on the continent of Antarctica. The polar explorers, who covered a
record 3,600 miles by ski and dog sled, discovered the Ronne Ice Shelf (first
called the Edith Ronne Ice Shelf, the first named after a non-royal woman) at
the southern coast of the Weddell Sea. Edith Ronne's own description of this
