In full: "On behalf of the Government of Israel and myself, I wish to express sincere thanks for your message of July 18, 1952, expressing, on behalf of the Officers and Board of Directors of the United Service for New Americans, as well as yourself, condolences and sympathy on the passing of the Deputy Prime Minister, Eliezer Kaplan. Mr. Kaplan's death is a great loss to all of us, and your kind words are sincerely appreciated." ELIEZER KAPLAN (1891-1952) was also Israel's first Minister of Finance from independence on May 14, 1948 to his death on June 25, 1952. Abba Eban, Israel's greatest orator, was born in South Africa in 1915. He served as Israel's first Ambassador to the United Nations (1949-1959), Ambassador to the United States (1950-1959), Minister of Education in Ben-Gurion's Cabinet (1960-1963), Deputy Prime Minister (1964-1965) and Foreign Minister of Israel (1966-1974).
