Document 102218 JEAN-MARIE de LATTRE de TASSIGNY Commander of French troops in Europe and Indochina sends his autograph three months before his death. Scarce TLS: "J. de Lattre", 1p, 5¼x4. Paris, 1951 October 13. In French, translated. To Ernest F. Manfred, New York. In full: "I gladly agree to give you the autograph which you asked of me for your collection. Find it on this card and believe my best wishes." General Lattre was imprisoned by the Germans (1942-1943), but escaped to North Africa. He took command of the French 1st Army in 1943 and led it in Allied landing operations in southern France in August 1944 and in a drive across France, Germany and Austria. He commanded troops in French Indochina in 1950-1951, dying on January 11, 1952 in Paris at 62. He was made Marshal of France posthumously. Creased at upper left and lower right blank corners.
