JASCHA HEIFETZ
To the doctor who delivered his son, Bobby.
ALS: "Jascha Heifetz", 1¼p, 6x7½, front and verso. No place (probably California), 1932 September 11. To Dr. Williams. In full: "I want to thank you ever so much for helping to bring into the world the new edition in our family - and for the excellent care you have taken of Mrs. Heifetz. I was so delighted with little Bobby - more than words can express - and my only deep regret was - that at the time of the baby's arrival (not to mention all the time) I was not near his mother to have witnessed & shared the immediate joy - Hope that I will have the pleasure of meeting you in the near future, and With all good wishes." Closing and signature on verso. In 1929, Heifetz married Florence Vidor, a star of silent films. They had two children, Josepha and Robert. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1945. Heifetz married Frances Spiegelberg in 1947 and they had a son Joseph (Jay). None of Heifetz's children pursued a musical career, which was fine with their father who, according to a July 31, 1954 press biography, wanted "them to be happy, ordinary, blithe". Jascha Heifetz (1899-1987) made his public debut at the Vilnius (Russia) Music School at the age of six, playing Medelssohn's Concerto on his violin. His family came to the United States after the 1917 Russian Revolution and, at the age of 17, Heifetz made his U.S. debut at Carnegie Hall. Winning the highest expression of enthusiasm from the public and the press, he traveled throughout the world as a concert violinist. Heifetz also made extensive transcriptions for violin by Bach, Vivaldi and contemporary composers and made hundreds of recordings. Fragile. We believe the letter had been glued to another page but was expertly removed as there are no glue remnants. However it is creased and there are tears affecting 4 words. Nicked edges. Folds, with 3-inch separation at mid-vertical fold. ¼-inch slit hole on 1st page, 1-inch triangular hole at blank area of signature page (not touching signature). The signature is creased.
