Document 17351 ALPHONSO TAFT Future President's father acknowledges receipt of payment of note. ADS: "Alphonso Taft", 1p, 7¾x4½. No place, 1866 May 22. In full: "Received, May 22, 1866 of Channing Richards Sr two hundred dollars, on account of his note held by me, which is to be indorsed (sic) thereon." Two-cent U.S. Internal Revenue stamp affixed at left with Alfonso Taft's initials and endorsement. Addressed on verso by Taft to: "Chas P. Taft Esq/No 1. Masonic Temple". CHANNING RICHARDS was U.S. Attorney Southern District of Ohio from February 16, 1877 to February 7, 1885. Twenty-two-year-old CHARLES P. TAFT (1843-1929), an 1864 graduate of Yale, was Alphonso Taft's eldest son. Charles received his Masters degree from the University in 1867. ALPHONSO TAFT (1810-1891) was a Judge on the Cincinnati Superior Court (1865-1872) when he wrote this receipt. He later served as Grant's Secretary of War (1876), Attorney General (1876-1877), U.S. Minister to Austria-Hungary (1882-1884) and to Russia (1884-1885). He had four sons and one daughter with each of his wives: Fanny (1823-1852) whom he married in 1841 and Louisa (1827-1907) whom he married in 1853. President William H. Taft (1857-1930) was the second son born to his second wife. Irregular top and left side edge. Lightly creased. Folds, vertical fold touches the "T" in Alphonso's Taft and the "Ta" in Alphonso's leaf to Charles Taft.
