First day cover issued in memory of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, five-cent Roosevelt stamp affixed, postmarked Washington, D.C., January 30, 1946, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. A previous owner has typed "(World War 1939-45)" in the cancellation, "Hon'y V.Chm American Red Cross" beneath Bess Truman's signature and "Members of the United Service Orgn." beneath Margaret Truman's signature. The envelope is addressed to: "Her Excellency Mrs. Harry S. Truman,/Miss Margaret Truman./The White House,/Washington, D.C." Harry Truman was FDR's Vice President from January 20th to April 12, 1945, when President Roosevelt died and Truman succeeded to the Presidency. Bess (1885-1982) and Margaret (born 1924) were at home when Truman called to tell them FDR had died. Bess's first act as First Lady was to console Eleanor Roosevelt and tell her she could stay at the White House as long as necessary. The White House staff called the first family the "Three Musketeers". During Truman's 1948 whistle-stop presidential campaign, President Truman would make a speech and then introduce Bess as "The Boss" and 24-year-old Margaret as "The One who Bosses the Boss". Six-year-old Harry Truman first met five-year-old Bess Wallace in a Sunday School class in Independence, Missouri. Harry later said it was love at first sight. At his death in 1972, Harry and Bess Truman had been married for 53 years but they had known each other for an incredible 82 years! Their only child, Margaret had four sons with husband Clifton Daniel (1912-2000). Lightly soiled, edges lightly worn and creased. Overall, fine condition.
