     Document 101622

ELIZA BALLOU GARFIELD
First President's mother to witness her son's inauguration.
Signature: "Eliza Ballou Garfield", 3½x2¼ card. On February 3, 1820, 20-year-old Abram Garfield married 18-year-old Eliza Ballou in Zanesville, Ohio. They had five children: Mehitabel (born 1821), Thomas (born 1822), Mary (1824-1884), James Ballou (1826-1829) and James Abram (1831-1881), who was only 18 months old when his father died on May 8, 1833, at the age of 33. Eliza had been born in Richmond, New Hampshire on September 21, 1801 of a Huguenot family that fled from France to New England after the revolution of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. Eliza was the first mother of a President to witness the inauguration of her son, and the first act of President Garfield after his inauguration was to kiss his mother. Mrs. Garfield was also the first President's mother to live at the White House. She died in Mentor, Ohio on January 21, 1888 at the age of 86, surviving her son, the President, by six years and four months. Light triangular marks at corners from being placed in an autograph album. Fine condition.
