Document 101720 LUCY W. HAYES The first First Lady to graduate from college. Signature: "Lucy W. Hayes", 4¾x1¾. On December 30, 1852, 30-year-old Rutherford Birchard Hayes and 21-year-old Lucy Ware Webb were married in Cincinnati. They had seven sons and one daughter; three sons died before the age of two. Lucy Hayes started the annual Easter Egg Roll on the White House lawn after Congress complained that the children were ruining the Capitol lawn. The Hayes family believed in temperance, and Mrs. Hayes was nicknamed "Lemonade Lucy" because she never served alcohol at White House functions. She loved animals, and while First Lady, was presented with one of the first Siamese cats to be brought to the United States. She had her husband build a pet cemetery at their Spiegel Grove, Ohio home. Mrs. Hayes died suddenly in 1889 at the age of 57 of a massive apoplectic stroke. Lightly soiled at blank margins. Fine condition. SEE IF DOCUMENT 101720 IS FOR SALE RIGHT NOW!!
