Document 13863 ANDREW JOHNSON The first U.S. President to be impeached, he is the only former President elected to the U.S. Senate. Signature: "Andrew Johnson/Greenville/Tenn/Augst 1870" in pencil, 5x2¾ card. Signed on a card pre-printed by an autograph collector. Although Johnson had been elected Vice President with Republican Lincoln in 1864, he was a Democrat. At the 1868 Democratic National Convention, President Johnson sought his party's presidential nomination. He had 65 votes on the first ballot. Only George H. Pendleton had more (105). There were 45 other Democrats nominated for President. On the 22nd ballot, former New York Governor Horatio Seymour, who had not received any votes on the first ballot, received the nomination. In 1869, Johnson was a candidate for the U.S. Senate from Tennessee but was defeated. In 1872, he was a candidate for Congressman-at-large from Tennessee and, although defeated, regained his hold upon the people of the state. In January 1875, he was elected U.S. Senator, the only former U.S. President elected to the Senate. He served in the Senate from March 4, 1875 until his death at age 66 on July 30, 1875.
