ANDREW JOHNSON and GIDEON WELLES
Naval commission of a Lieutenant Commander who eventually rose to Rear Admiral.
Partly Printed DS: "Andrew Johnson" as President and "Gideon Welles" as Secretary of the Navy, 1p, 14¼x17. Washington, 1868 March 12. On vellum. In part: "Know Ye, that reposing special Trust and Confidence in the Patriotism, Valour, Fidelity and Abilities of Purnell F. Harrington, I have nominated and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, do appoint him a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy from the 12th day of March 1868, in the service of the United States...." On March 3, 1868, President Johnson nominated PURNELL F. HARRINGTON and 44 other Lieutenants (including Charles D. Sigsby, Commander of the battleship Maine when it exploded in Havana harbor in 1898, and Charles V. On March 12, 1868, the Senate consented to Harrington's appointment, and President Johnson signed his appointment the same day. From April 1, 1903 to July 7, 1906, Rear Admiral Purnell F. Harrington was commander of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Folds do not touch signatures. Shaded at top blank margin. Lightly creased. Overall, fine condition.
