     Document 30572

BENJAMIN HARRISON
South portico of the White House.
White House Vignette signed: "Benj Harrison" as 23rd President, 1p, 4½x3½ card. The Harrisons had envisioned an expansion of the White House, but, because of a lack of funds, had to be content with refurbishing and redecorating the state rooms. During Harrison's one term in office, electric lights were also installed. However the President and First Lady, slightly leery of the modern marvel, continued to use gaslight most of the time. First Lady Caroline Harrison died in the White House on October 25, 1892. After her body was embalmed, her casket was placed in the East Room, where her funeral was held on October 27, 1892. Mounting traces on verso at four corners (no show through), else in fine condition.
