Document 49305 CHESTER A. ARTHUR Sworn in as 21st U.S. President in New York City. Signature: "Chester A. Arthur", 4x2½ card. On November 21, 1871, President Ulysses S. Grant appointed Chester Alan Arthur, a New York lawyer and a member of the Stalwart wing of the Republican Party, as Collector of the Port of New York. Because of corrupt practices, Arthur was asked to resign by President Hayes in 1878. After Arthur refused, he was removed as Collector by Executive Order issued by Hayes on July 11, 1878. On November 2, 1880, Arthur was elected Garfield's Vice President. Four months after the inauguration, President Garfield was shot by lawyer Charles J. Guiteau, a disappointed office seeker who wanted Arthur to be President. When Garfield died at 10:30 P.M. on September 19, 1881, the Vice President was in New York City. He was sworn in at his Manhattan home at 123 Lexington Avenue at 2 A.M., September 20, 1881. Arthur sought the Republican presidential nomination in 1884 but finished second in the balloting to Garfield's Secretary of State, James G. Blaine. Arthur died on November 18, 1886 at the age of 57, less than two years after leaving the White House. Mounting remnant on verso (no show through). Lightly shaded at bottom blank margin. Overall, fine condition. SEE IF DOCUMENT 49305 IS FOR SALE RIGHT NOW!!
