Document 76111 DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER Two weeks after becoming the Republican Presidential nominee, General Eisenhower thanks supporter. TLS: "Dwight D. Eisenhower" as Republican presidential nominee, 1p, 5¾x7¾. Brown Palace Hotel, Denver, Colorado, 1952 July 23. On "Office of Dwight D. Eisenhower" stationery. To Mrs. Jennie Dow, Brockton, Massachusetts. In full: "Mrs. Eisenhower joins me in sincerest thanks for your heart-warming message. It was most kind of you to write as you did and encouraging to know that we will have your continued help in the task ahead." At the Republican National Convention held in Chicago's International Amphitheatre, July 7-11, 1952, Eisenhower had been nominated on the first ballot. His only real opposition came from Ohio Senator Robert A. Taft, son of 27th President William H. Taft. But, with 604 votes needed for the nomination, Eisenhower defeated Taft 845-280. California Governor Earl Warren had 77 votes and General Douglas MacArthur received four. Eisenhower vacationed in Denver before he started his campaign in earnest. This is a rare, authentically signed Eisenhower letter from Denver. Usually, letters from this period are secretarially signed. Creased, with horizontal fold touching signature, else fine condition.
