     Document 88383

GEORGE BUSH
Rare full signature of the first Acting President.
ALS: "George Herbert Walker Bush" as Republican Vice Presidential nominee, 1¼p, 6¼x4½, front and verso. Houston, Texas, 1980 September 16. On his blue bordered personal note card. In full: "Thanks for your help. Here's my genuine signature in full. Normally I sign George Bush but here's the full one: George Herbert Walker Bush." On July 17, 1980, at the Republican National Convention held in Detroit, George Bush was nominated as Reagan's running mate. They defeated Carter-Mondale in a landslide and were reelected in 1984 in a greater landslide. On July 13, 1985, President Reagan underwent surgery for removal of a cancerous polyp from his large intestine. Before receiving anesthesia, the President transferred the powers of the Presidency to Vice President Bush by writing a letter to Senate President Pro Tempore Strom Thurmond and House Speaker Tip O'Neill invoking the provisions of Section 3 of the 25th Amendment to the Constitution. After his surgery, President Reagan wrote a letter to the two leaders of Congress resuming his duties. For seven hours and 54 minutes, George Bush was Acting President of the United States. In 1988, Bush became the first incumbent Vice President to be elected President since Van Buren in 1836. Bush had been named in honor of his maternal grandfather, George Herbert Walker. As he has written in this letter, he normally signs just his first and last names. Fine condition.
