GERALD R. FORD
On his first full day as Vice President, Ford thanks a Congressman for confirmation vote.
Scarce TLS:
"Jerry" as Nixon's Vice President, 1p, 7x9. Washington, 1973 December 7. To New Jersey Congressman Matthew J. Rinaldo. In full: "With humility and gratitude, I thank you for your confidence in confirming my nomination as Vice President of the United States. It is heartwarming to have your personal support and encouragement as I enter this new office. Naturally, I am sad at leaving the House which has been my home for nearly twenty-five years. However, fulfilling the responsibilities of the second office in our Nation is a challenge in which I will need the support and counsel of my friends in the House. With warmest personal regards and deep appreciation." The 25th Amendment became part of the U.S. Constitution on February 10, 1967. It provides that when the vice presidency becomes vacant the President shall appoint a successor, subject to majority approval by both houses of Congress. Vice President Spiro T. Agnew pleaded no contest to a charge of income tax evasion and resigned on October 10, 1973. Two days later, President Nixon nominated Congressman Gerald R. Ford of Michigan to succeed him. Following a thorough and relatively nonpartisan investigation, the Senate confirmed Ford's nomination on November 27th and the House approved it on December 6, 1973. Following the House vote, Ford was sworn in as Vice President. The day after he was sworn in, Vice President Ford wrote this letter to freshman Congressman MATTHEW J. RINALDO, a New Jersey Republican. Rinaldo served in the House from 1973-1993. Succeeding to the Presidency after President Nixon resigned on August 9, 1974, Ford served only 246 days in the nation's second highest office. Anything signed by Ford during his short term as Vice President is scarce. Lightly creased, not near signature. Fine condition.
