Document 169660 GROVER CLEVELAND'S INAUGURAL BALL First Inauguration, March 4, 1885. Inaugural Souvenir signed in facsimile: "Grover Cleveland" and "T.A. Hendricks", 9x6½ card. Imprinted: "INAUGURATION BALL" at top center, "March 4th 1885/Commemorative of the Inauguration of/Grover Cleveland/President/T.A. Hendricks/Vice President/of the United States". The names of the members of the inaugural committees are listed at the left and the right. In the background are the Washington Monument, the White House and the Capitol. The Washington Monument had just been dedicated by outgoing President Arthur on February 21, 1885 and opened to the public on October 9, 1888. In 1883, the War Memorial Building at 4th and F Streets, N.W. was built at a cost of $900,000. From 1885, when the Bureau of Pensions took the building over, to 1909 the central hall was the scene of Inaugural Balls of Presidents Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison, McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt and Taft. The 1885 Inaugural Ball was the first to rely solely on electric lights and was said to be a "perfect carnival of animation that almost turned night into day". GROVER CLEVELAND is the only U.S. President to serve two non-consecutive terms (1885-1889, 1893-1897). THOMAS A. HENDRICKS served only 266 days, dying on November 25, 1885. Stray ink mark in upper right blank corner. Fine condition. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 14½x17¾. SEE IF DOCUMENT 169660 IS FOR SALE RIGHT NOW!!
