GROVER CLEVELAND
Northeast portico of the White House signed as bachelor President.
Engraved White House Vignette signed: "Grover Cleveland/Oct 26, 1885" as 22nd U.S. President. 1p, 4½x3¼ image inlaid to 9x11¾ sheet that has an irregular left edge from removal from a bound book. Fine condition. Accompanied by an engraved portrait of Cleveland signed in facsimile. 1p, 5x7¼ overall, image 3¾x3¾ (one surface). Mounted to 9x11¾ sheet, with an irregular left edge from removal from bound book. Stray ink marks in blank right border. Overall, fine condition. The bachelor President signed this card during his first year in the White House, eight months before his marriage. In his first term 1885-1889, Cleveland vetoed 414 (two-thirds) of the bills Congress passed. No U.S. President before or since has vetoed more during a single term. Only two of his vetoed bills were overridden by the Republican controlled Senate and the Democrat controlled House. Two items.
