Document 43738 JAMES A. GARFIELD Garfield requests eulogies on Andrew Johnson. Manuscript NS: "J.A. Garfield" in pencil, 1p, 6½x3¼. (Washington), 1877 February 17. To Supt. Folding Room. In full: "Deliver to Rolfe & Saunders five copies Eulogies on Andrew Johnson". All is in ink except for "five" and the signature. Printed on verso: "Public Document/House of Rep's U.S." Andrew Johnson, the only former President to be elected to the U.S. Senate, represented Tennessee from March 4, 1875 until his death on July 31, 1875. As a Congressman, Garfield had sided with the Radical Republicans in both the Reconstruction Acts and the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson. Garfield signed this telegram while serving on the Electoral Commission that decided the Hayes-Tilden election. Two nailhead-size file holes at left in blank area.
