     Document 251329

LYNDON B. JOHNSON and LADY BIRD JOHNSON
Inscribed to the wife of U.N. Ambassador Arthur Goldberg.
Photograph Mount inscribed and signed: "For Dorothy Goldberg - with appreciation and warm wishes-Lady Bird and" by the First Lady and "Lyndon B. Johnson" by the 36th U.S. President. Color, 11½x7½ image tipped matted to 16½x13¾ (two surfaces). Mrs. Johnson has also added the date: "December 1967". DOROTHY KURGANS GOLDBERG (1908-1988) and ARTHUR JOSEPH GOLDBERG (1908-1990) were married in 1931 and had two children, Barbara and Robert. In 1975, Mrs. Goldberg, an artist, writer and human rights advocate, wrote her memoirs, A Private View of a Public Life. Arthur Goldberg served as Secretary of Labor in the Cabinet of President John F. Kennedy and was appointed to the Supreme Court by Kennedy in 1962. President Johnson convinced Goldberg to leave the Court in 1965 to become U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, but he resigned that position in 1968 when he felt that he could not play a part in bringing the Vietnam War to a halt. This photograph was taken in the White House while Goldberg was at the United Nations. Dorothy and Arthur Goldberg are buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Light horizontal striation in foreground. Fine condition.
