Document 23170 JOHN CARDINAL McCLOSKEY America's first Cardinal to longtime Archbishop of Cincinnati re: the dedication of New York City's St. Patrick's Cathedral. ALS: "John Card. Abp. Of N. York", 1p, 5x8 tipped at left edge to 5½x9 card. Archbishoprick of New York, New York, 1879 April 22. To Most Rev. Dr. Purcell, Archbishop of Cincinnati. In full: "I am sorry that we shall not have the pleasure & honor of your presence at our dedication. I hardly dared to hope that you might be able to undertake the journey at this time. I am glad to see that the prospect before you is growing somewhat brighter. Please accept the enclosed for yourself personally. When will you send a Priest to this city. The sooner now the better. I am at this moment in the midst of all the confusion & bother of moving. It is no easy task, after a fifteen years' residence in the one house. This must be my apology for so hurried a letter. Renewing assurances of highest veneration & esteem." Dr. JOHN BAPTIST PURCELL was Archbishop of Cincinnati from 1833-1883. In 1841, McCloskey organized and became the first President of St. John's College (now Fordham University) in New York. In 1859, work was begun on building St. Patrick's Cathedral on 50th Street and Fifth Avenue in New York City. During construction in 1866, St. Patrick's Old Cathedral on Prince and Mott Streets was destroyed by fire, rebuilt and rededicated by Archbishop McCloskey in 1868. In 1875, the Archbishop of New York was created the first American Cardinal. A month after this letter was written, on May 25, 1879, St. Patrick's Cathedral was dedicated by JOHN CARDINAL McCLOSKEY. Mounting stains, with show through in upper blank portion. Soiled, nailhead-size stain touches 1 word of text. SEE IF DOCUMENT 23170 IS FOR SALE RIGHT NOW!!
