BLAZE STARR
A previously untold incident involving Louisiana Governor Earl K. Long, Blaze Starr and skinny dipping.
ALS: "Blaze Starr", 1p, 8½x11. No place, no date. To Ernie. Spelling not corrected. In full: "Just a Note to answer your letter, Oh yes there was a lot of things I didn't tell in any book or the movie 'Blaze'. When I was engaged to Governor Earl K. Long of La., his very favorite thing was a special water hole where we would go skinny dippin. First we would stop at a little country store and buy Vienna sausage, cheese crackers and Co-cola, and have a picnic first. His body guards would wait in the limozine and read, about a block away. I stripped to my panties, and Earl kept only his shorts on. He sat at the edge in the water, while I bounced in the waist deep part, and sang mockin Bird hill, and Blue Berry hill, Earls favorite songs. Well Earl suddenly Jumped up Hollerin in pain and said something was biteing him. He was a very modest man, and wouldn't let me check his bottom. I turned my head so he could take his shorts off. I dressed and ran to the Limozine for help. Earl had sat in a 'leach bed!' I only had one leach between my toes, but Earl had more than twenty, between his legs, and on his bottom side. he left his shorts there, and his body guards helped him dress. We rushed him moaning in pain to his Dr. about fifteen miles away. the Dr. removed them and gave him some pills. I Jokeingly Called him 'Leachey Balls' He said, don't ever call me that again. 'I didn't'. Well Ernie, take care and write soon, Your friend Always." New Orleans stripper Blaze Starr's involvement with Louisiana Governor Earl K. Long (1895-1960) resulted in a major political scandal and was the subject of Blaze, a 1989 Academy Award nominated film starring Paul Newman as Long. Long served as Governor three times: 1939-1940, 1948-1952, 1956-1960. After Long died, the flamboyant Starr renewed her friendship with John F. Kennedy, whom she had first met in 1952. In a personal letter to a fan, Starr said that on one occasion the President picked her up at her Maryland home while Jackie Kennedy was away on a cruise. The two then shared a romantic hour in the Lincoln bedroom in the White House. Blaze Starr has colorfully adorned the letter with a revealing self-portrait (captioned: "Me/Blaze"), a rose, a shooting star and a lipstick print. Very lightly creased. Light diagonal crease touches the "ze". Fine condition.
