BERGDORF GOODMAN: EDWIN GOODMAN
Photo inscribed to famous photographer.
Photo Mount inscribed and signed: "To Fabian Bachrach/Edwin Goodman". B/w, 11¼x16½ overall, image 8¾x11¼ (two surfaces). Photographer's imprint at bottom right corner of photo: "Fabian Bachrach". Goodman's obituary from the "New York Times" taped to verso. A skilled women's tailor, Goodman, who was hired by Herman Bergdorf in 1900, was made a partner in Bergdorf Goodman the following year. When Bergdorf retired in 1903, Goodman became the sole proprietor of the shop that catered to a wealthy clientele. The pioneer in American haute couture and merchandizing died in his penthouse atop the store at 754 Fifth Avenue at the age of 76. He inscribed this image, taken by famous portrait photographer Fabian Bachrach, to Bachrach himself. Surface scratches at background. Identifying label pasted at lower margin of mat. Mat is lightly soiled and yellowed. Black tape remnants at edges. Overall, fine condition.
