Document 261591
FRANK COSTELLO. Signature: "Frank
Costello" in pencil, 5x2¾ card. Lightly shaded, touching signature.
Pinhead-size stains at blank area beneath signature. Mounting remnants on verso,
light show through. Accompanied by the November 28, 1949 cover of "Time"
magazine, picturing him as "Gambler Frank Costello" and two pages of the cover
story (one sheet, front and verso). Creased, worn, staple holes, mid-horizontal
fold, nicked edges. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on cover with remnants of
address label. Frank Costello (1891-1973) was one of the nation's top underworld
figures. As Lucky Luciano's right-hand man, he took over when his boss was
deported in 1946. The U.S. government turned their attention to Costello by
1951. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison for contempt of court and five
years for tax evasion. In 1957, while out on bail, Costello was shot in his
hotel lobby, a hit allegedly ordered by the rival Genovese crime family, led by
Vito Genovese. Costello survived, but, having been sentenced to prison again for
contempt of a grand jury, spent the next four years in jail. In 1961, he was
released, but he lost his U.S. citizenship. By this time, although Genovese was
dead, Costello had lost his influence in the crime syndicate. Two items.
