ARISTIDE BRIAND. Manuscript LS: "A.
Briand" as French Minister of Justice, 2p, 4½x7. Paris, 1908
February 2. In French, not translated. To an unnamed Deputy concerning a
letter he has received concerning a recommended candidate not on the list.
Briand was Foreign Minister (1915-17, 1921-22, 1925-26, 1926-1932) and Prime
Minister (1909-11, 1913, 1915-17, 1921-22, 1825-26, 1929) of France. He shared
the 1926 Nobel Peace Prize with Germany's Gustav Stresemann for the Locarno
Pact. In 1928, with U.S. Secretary of State Frank B. Kellogg, Briand formulated
the Kellogg-Briand Pact outlawing war as a means of solving disputes. Lightly
creased. Folds, horizontal fold touches the "A" and the loop of the "B", which
is also affected by light vertical fold. ½-inch separation at mid-horizontal
fold at blank margin below signature.
