Document 174906
GIUSEPPE MAZZINI. ALS: "Joseph Mazzini"
in English, 1p, 4½x7¼. Chelsea (England), 1842 February 18. In full:
"Would you be so kind as to tell me how much a single letter posted here for
Zurich (Switzerland) is to be charged? Is not the charge of a single letter for
Switzerland one and two pence? I have been charged, spite of all memory money,
one and ten pence at the post office Fulham Road." In 1831, Mazzini
organized the secret revolutionary society, Giovine Italia (Young Italy), whose
purpose was the unification of Italy under a republican form of government. The
movement failed, and Mazzini was forced to flee to Switzerland. Settling in
London, he continued his revolutionary activities until he returned to Italy at
the outbreak of revolution in 1848, becoming a member of the ruling triumvirate
in the Republic of Rome (1849). Mazzini went into exile when papal control of
the city was reestablished. Docketing (unknown hand) on verso (light show
through at left margin). Folds, light vertical fold touches the "p" in Joseph.
Fine condition.
