Document 81618
MARIA FITZHERBERT. Rare ALS: "M
Fitzherbert", 1p, 7¼x9. Cranford Lodge, 1807 October 23. With five line
postscript on verso. To an unnamed recipient, thanking him for having
settled an account with Mr. Holland, sending a draft for the money and
discussing the difficulties of obtaining any settlement with architect William
Porden. PORDEN was responsible for parts of the Brighton Pavillion and,
on the orders of the Prince of Wales (future King George IV), had built for
MARIA FITZHERBERT a French villa close by. Porden's exceeding the
estimate for building the house had gotten Mrs. Fitzherbert into financial
difficulties. In part: "What has become of Porden I fear you will
never be able to settle with him for his frivolous excuses of going out of town
& promises on his return to settle the accounts has lasted now for two years
& a half, & it realy (sic) does annoy me very much...." In 1785, Maria
Fitzherbert, widowed in 1781, met the eldest son of King George III, the Prince
of Wales, who fell in love with her. They were married privately on December 21,
1785. According to the Royal Marriages Act (1772), it was illegal for a member
of the royal family to marry a Roman Catholic. As Maria was a Roman Catholic,
the marriage was sanctioned by the Pope. In 1795, George married Caroline of
Brunswick and Mrs. Fitzherbert left him for a time. They later lived together
again until 1803. Lightly creased. Folds, vertical fold touches the "M" and "F".
Light show through of writing on verso, not at signature. Mounting remnants and
ink notes on verso (light show through at upper blank corners. Irregular left
edge. Overall, fine condition.
