WILLIAM REA FURLONG. Photograph signed:
"Rear Adm'l Wm Rea Furlong U.S.N./Commandant Navy Yard and/Naval Operating
Base,/Pearl Harbor, T.H./during World War II". B/w, 8x10. Dated in pencil on
verso (unknown hand): "June 1942". During WWII, William Rea Furlong
(1881-1976) took part in the engagement against the Japanese attack on Pearl
Harbor December 7, 1941, during which his flag-ship, the USS Oglala, was
sunk. On December 12, 1941, he was ordered to Pearl Harbor to raise the ships
that had been sunk and to command the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard and Pearl Harbor
Navy Base. It was his responsibility to salvage the ships that were sunk on
December 7, 1941, repair them and send them off to war. He did this until
July 18, 1945, when he reached retirement age. He was awarded the Legion of
Merit and the Gold Star. Fine condition.
