Document 27967
HIRAM BINGHAM. Exceedingly rare TLS:
"Hiram Bingham" as Governor of Connecticut, 1p, 8½x11.
Hartford, 1925 January 7. On his official stationery as Governor to Mr.
C.B. Whittlesey, President, The Hartford Rubber Works Company. In part:
"By a curious turn of the wheel of fate, the office into which I have just
been inaugurated must pass out of my hands tomorrow...I am going to resign
tomorrow and shortly after that assume my new duties as United States senator
from Connecticut. The law makes no provision for a governor-elect to resign and
the lieutenant governor-elect to then be inaugurated as governor...." On
November 4, 1924, Bingham had been elected Governor of Connecticut. On December
16, 1924, Governor-elect Bingham was elected U.S. Senator to fill the vacancy
caused by the suicide of Senator Frank B. Brandegee. Bingham served in the
Senate from December 17, 1924 to March 3, 1933, but did not assume his Senate
duties until he resigned as Governor on January 8, 1925, the day after he wrote
this letter. Lightly creased. Folds, vertical fold touches the "g" in Bingham.
½-inch separation at blank left margin at mid-horizontal fold, 3 file holes at
blank left margin. Overall, fine condition.
