JOHN LAMB. Partly Printed DS: "John
Lamb/Colltr" beneath Partly Printed DS: "Simeon Coffin", 1p, 7x5¾.
New York City, 1795 October 27. In part: "I Simeon Coffin do
solemnly swear that the Report or Manifest, now delivered by me to the Collector
of this District, contains, to the best of my Knowledge and Belief, a true
Account of all the Goods, Wares, and Merchandize which were on Board the Ship
Joseph at the Time of her sailing, from the Port of Cowes or at any Time
since; and of which Vessel I am at present Master...." The English port of
Cowes is on the northern coast of the Isle of Wight on the English Channel.
Lamb, appointed Collector of Customs for the Port of New York by President
Washington, held the post until his death in 1800. An active participant in New
York resistance to the British, he had been a soldier in Richard Montgomery's
December 1775 expedition to Quebec, where he was wounded and taken prisoner.
Lamb returned to New York in the summer of 1776 and was promoted to Major and
Colonel of Artillery under General Henry Knox. Remnants of red wax seal on verso
show through at upper left corner, transferred stain at lower left corner from
being folded. Overall, in fine condition.
