Document 33338
ELEANOR ROOSEVELT. TL: "Eleanor
Roosevelt", 1p, 6x7. New York, N.Y., 1933 February 15. To Mrs. W.
Arthur Saltford, Poughkeepsie, New York. In full: "I am so glad that
you are going to be in Washington and I shall look forward to seeing you. Do
come for to me at the Mayflower that morning. We have to leave before 11 o'clock
but I would love to have a glimpse of you. I am happy that you are pleased about
the Nesbitts. I know they will be a comfort to me." The very day Mrs.
Roosevelt wrote this letter, her husband, elected President three months
earlier, was the victim of an assassination attempt. While FDR was giving a
speech in Miami, Florida, unemployed bricklayer Guiseppe Zangara fired five
shots at him, hitting four bystanders and Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak, a member
of the President-elect's party. Cermak died of his wound on March 6, 1933, two
days after Roosevelt was sworn in as the 32nd President of the United States.
The Nesbitts are most probably the family of Henrietta Nesbitt whom Eleanor
Roosevelt had appointed as White House-keeper. Creased. Folds, light vertical
fold touches the flourish of the "E" in Eleanor. ¼-inch tear at blank left
margin above fold (all intact). Overall, fine condition.
