ANDREW JACKSON. ADS: "Andrew Jackson",
1p, 7¾x5. Hermitage, 1843 August 11. In full: "The bearer Major George
D. Martin, a [illegible], is about to visit the Springs in Kentucky for
his health-he is a gentleman of fine moral character, of high sense of
honor, and honesty and such I recommend him to the notice & polite attention
of all good citizens, through the country wheresoever he may visit."
Integral leaf addressed in Jackson's hand to: "Major George D.
Martin/Tyrees Springs". Tyree's Springs, Sumner County, Tennessee, is about
20 miles from Nashville. It was known for its cold water and pure air. In 1837,
Jackson had retired to the Hermitage, his home near Nashville, after completing
his two terms in the White House. At his death two years after writing this
letter, Jackson owned 1,000 acres, 200 of which were planted in cotton. He owned
a cotton gin for his own crops and ginned his neighbors' cotton for a fee. The
baled cotton was then transported on a steamboat to New Orleans and from there
it was shipped to textile mills in Great Britain. Folds, vertical fold touches
the "J". Heavily penned, ink has spread at the "w" of Andrew and the "Jac" of
Jackson, chemistry of ink has resulted in pinholes at some letters. Lightly
shaded, stray ink smudges. Nicked at edges of folds. Slight separations at folds
(all intact). Overall, fine condition.
