BENJAMIN HARRISON. ALS: "Benj
Harrison" as U.S. Senator, 1p, 4½x8. On U.S. Senate stationery but
written from Indianapolis, 1883 August 9. To Chas. P. Watson Esq.,
Peoria. In full: "I got home from Lebanon last night & find your
letter here this morning. Johnson is away & letters are accumulating - so if
you can come back Friday night so as to clean up Saturday I would be obliged. If
there is any special reason why you would rather remain till Monday that will
do." WATSON, Harrison's secretary in his Indianapolis office, was
visiting his family. He later served as Justice of the Peace in Peoria.
HARRISON served one term in Congress as U.S. Senator from Indiana
(1881-1887) and one term as President (1889-1893), losing reelection in 1892 to
the man he defeated in 1888, Grover Cleveland. Horizontal folds do not touch
signature, but upper one has separated, all intact. Lightly stained, touching
the first name.
