CALVIN COOLIDGE
Money matters relating to an estate.
Rare ALS:
"Calvin Coolidge" as Councilman, 1p, 8¼x10¾. Northampton, Massachusetts, 1899 April 15. On his "Calvin Coolidge/Law Office" stationery, the 26-year-old lawyer writes to Charles H. Dunning, Northampton. In full: "We forgot to take out anything for the Appraisers - I think $3.00 would be a fair price for each. Making the distribution $138.95 leaving in the Savings Bank $277.90 + $4.00 = $281.90. I enclose new receipt for Eilsan and suggest that you do not pay the other heirs until you hear from him. The other bills you can pay." An Amherst graduate (June 26, 1895), Coolidge was admitted to the bar on July 2, 1897 and went into law practice in Northampton, Massachusetts. He entered Republican state politics and was elected to his first office, City Councilman, in December 1898. Other than an election for School Committee in 1905, Coolidge was undefeated at the polls, serving as City Solicitor (1900-1901), Court Clerk (1903-1904), State Representative (1907-1908), Mayor of Northampton (1910-1911), State Senator (1912-1915), Lieutenant Governor (1916-1918), Governor (1919-1920), Vice President (1921-1923) and President (1923-1929). ALsS of 20th & 21st century presidents are scarce. Lightly creased, just touching signature. Staple holes at upper left blank edge, pinhead-size stain at right margin at horizontal fold.
