Document 32514
CALVIN COOLIDGE. Draft TLS: "Calvin
Coolidge" in pencil, 1p, 8½x6. No place, no date. To Mr. O'Laughlin. In
full: "I should like to add one thing to what you have
written: my confidence in the integrity of
the purpose of Congress to provide the people with the economic relief
which they must have." Coolidge has crossed out portions
and made additions in holograph to read: "I have every confidence in the
determined purpose of the Congress to provide the people with the economic
relief which present conditions require. Taxes must be reduced." Thirteen
words handwritten by Coolidge. After much debate, Congress passed the
Revenue Act of 1926, which President Coolidge signed on February 26, 1926.
It reduced federal income and inheritance taxes dramatically. By content,
this undated letter was probably written by Coolidge as President in late
1925. Fragile. Lightly creased. Torn edges and margins. 2 pinhead-size holes
at upper blank margins.
