Document 4970 FRANKLIN PIERCE The former President declines an invitation from a Massachusetts group. ALS: "Franklin Pierce", 2p, 4¼x7, front and verso. Rockingham House, Portsmouth, N.H., 1857 September 25. Six and a half months after leaving the White House, the former 14th U.S. President writes to five members of a committee: George Bliss, H. Alterman, Jr., John S. King, Jas S. Whitney and C.C. Chafford in Springfield, Mass. In full: "Your note of the 25th inst reached me this morning. I thank you for your kind invitation and much regret that it will not be in my power to accept it."
